How to play

Five flocks a day

Four birds land on a wire, each carrying a word. The words share a link. Name a fifth thing that belongs, before the light goes. The rarer your answer, the more it scores.

A round

On the wire: Poodle · Beagle · Pug · Dalmatian

The link: breeds of dog

You might type: Labrador, Whippet, Weimaraner, Basenji, or any other breed of dog.

  1. Spot the link. It might be a kind of thing (cheeses, rivers, chess openings), the work of one person (Beatles songs), or anything else four words can share.
  2. Name a fifth. Type any member of the group that isn’t already on the wire and press Enter. A wrong guess costs nothing, so keep trying.
  3. Mind the light. Each round has a minute of daylight. When it goes, the round ends and the link is shown.

Scoring: go rare

Every right answer counts, but answers fewer people would think of score more, and bring a rarer bird to the wire.

Rarity is judged per category: an answer is common if most people asked for one would think of it, and a vagrant if almost nobody would. How we score rarity.

What counts

The end of the day

After five rounds your field journal shows your score, your answers beside the rarest ones, and a rank from Fledgling to Field legend. Your share card shows only coloured squares for your tiers, so it won’t spoil the day for friends.

Each day can be played once, and a new flock lands every day.
