About Flocklet
A daily word game
Flocklet is a free daily game about knowing a little about a lot, and rewarding you for the answer nobody else thought of.
Every day five flocks land on the wire. Each is four words that share a link, and your job is to name a fifth. Anyone can name a Labrador; the fun is reaching for a Basenji. New to it? Start with how to play.
How the puzzles are made
Each puzzle comes from an answer list for one category: about five hundred of them, from dog breeds and rivers to Beatles songs, cheeses, constellations and chess openings. The lists begin from Wikipedia and Wikidata, then are checked by hand: removing entries that aren’t really members (a list of museums shouldn’t accept a museums association), adding the other names people actually type, and testing each list against the answers a player would expect to work.
Each day’s four words are picked from the list so the link can be found without being handed to you.
How rarity is scored
For every answer we estimate how many of a hundred people, asked for one member of the category, would name it. A list’s answers are then ranked by that estimate:
- Common: the handful that make up about half of what people would say.
- Uncommon: the next stretch, which most players could name if pushed.
- Rarity: answers that take real knowledge of the subject.
- Vagrant: the deep cuts, which almost nobody would think of.
The estimates are judgement calls and some will be wrong. We keep refining them as people play, and if one looks off to you, tell us at hello@flocklet.io.
The look
Flocklet is drawn like an old naturalist’s field guide: paper, ink and engraved plates, with the birds modelled in 3D and inked to match. The more surprising your answer, the more remarkable the bird that lands for it.
